The History of SBEBA

In the summer of 2012, Associate Professors, Clinicians and faculties Dr. Remya Krihnan and Dr.Rajkumar had introduced the new concept of Science Based Evidence Based Ayurveda The term described the crucial relevance of adopting the standardised Ayurvedic Science Based Evidence to practice Scientific Medicine in Ayurveda. The first publication of Science Based Evidence Based Ayurveda that technically defines and introduces the same is Evidence Based Ayurveda &Rational Prescribing, First Edition; Remya Krishnan (2012). The implication that the conventional Ayurveda practices lack clarity and transparency and hence unscientific, although true when measured by the quality control prescribing parameters of Ayurveda, were nonetheless unacceptable to Ayurveda community. This has led to the pioneers emerging the decision to start a formal training program for Ayurveda medical professionals and students in Evidence Based Practice of Science Based Medicine of Ayurveda titled Bhaarat Mission Bhishak; SBEBA Wisdom Series.

Although the term Science Based Evidence Based Ayurveda was introduced in 2012, the foundation for this novel strategy was accomplished through a decade of work by the pioneers. The effort to emerge the components of systematicity, precision and certainity to clinical decision making process spurred this novel approach. The impetus for SBEBA can be attributed to the conventional irrational, baseless and poorly standardised clinical decisions. Guru’s wisdom, experience and “what everyone do all these years” are the foundation of conventional Ayurveda clinical decision making. The comprehension and employment of inbuilt rational scientific standards adopting from Science of Ayurveda in Clinical decisions is unheard of in the world of conventional Ayurvedic Medicine.Historical precedence and intense lethargy to unlearn and relearn Science and Science Based Medicine posed barriers to emerging SBEBA.

The pioneers of SBEBA movement recognised a major deficit in conventional Ayurveda practices. Ayurvedic Science and its innate scientific parameters and methodologies have no translational application to Ayurvedic Clinical Medicine. They recognised that by accurately incorporating the Ayurvedic scientific diagnostic and treatment principles in conventional health problems of man,not only that the results are fast, accurate and intended but also it provided a  sound rational scientific basis to emerge  standardised clinical decisions in every individual patient in his own unique internal   environment. They recognised that the Ayurveda medical institutes even are unable to provide the students and professionals the necessary knowledge standards and tools to improve the accuracy and quality of clinical care.

SBEBA Wisdom series emerged a major breakthrough transformation in the life and career of many dedicated doctors who have joined the program and became change agents in their mode of practice. They remain as live evidences for the quality of SBEBA. They started diagnosing a clinical condition and a patient uniformly led by the scientific standards of SBEBA Clinical decision making and managed by adopting uniform inbuilt scientific standards of Ayurvedic science which yielded intended effect in intended time rather than an uncertain mix of some benefit risks. SBEBA  provides concrete methodologies to the systematic scientific study of diagnostic and therapeutic process inorder to effect the process of recovery in the patient which is the objective of Ayurvedic Medicine. The pioneers noticed the necessity to understand the deep and highly complex Ayurvedic Science and Science Based Medicine prior to learn their application at the bedside.

Two differently distinct effects emerged from the practice of SBEBA by the trained physicians in the past one decade: 1. Systematic clinical reasoning knowledge and skills trained have drastically improved the impact of their decisions in their patients. For example, previously they were loading medicines in prescriptions which got transformed to One Medicine Scientific Diet (OMSD) approached the impact of which was observed to be the predictable fast improvement in the healing process and completion of recovery.2. Irrational procedures and therapies were ended in their practice and patients recovered without the necessity of complex treatment procedures and by fragmented dosages of most minimal medication in most minimal period. Moreover they learnt professional communication with rationality, consistency in the explanation of working of their treatments by avoiding all kinds of personal bias. They stopped blaming Ayurveda medicines for their quality and recognised the scientific wisdom of rational application and thus emerging quality of prescription solely determines the impact of their prescribing. Many of them started getting addicted to learning Ayurvedic Science Bsaed Medicine and thus constantly culturing their intelligence and wisdom in the same. This has improved their confidence levels in taking up complex multi-morbid conditions treated by suppressants and several adjustment drugs of conventional system. They have also started attending medical emergencies and some casualties with immediate resolution of the same by the practice of principles of Science Based Medicine. The practice eof SBEBA is essential and crucial in every discipline of Ayurvedic Speciality to emerge Evidence Based Medical Practice in Ayurveda.
Thus SBEBA has made a clearly updated landmark opening on the face of Ayurvedic Medicine. The introduction of Golden standard of SBEBA, Evidence Triad Approach and tools of Vyadhi Bheshaja Prabhava Tatwas (VBPT) has emerged a systematised scientific approach to the practice of Ayurvedic Medicine. They have been and continue to be the contributors and cause of contributors and leaders to this movement. Their work has and will continue to have a profound impact on the quality of Ayurveda practice, research and professional education and facilitate global recognition of Ayurveda as independent Medical system of the world .
